Apart from a plethora of quartz (Stirlingshire had to import any flint from Yorkshire or Aberdeen), right at the end of the excavation a piece of charcoal was found – now sent off for carbon-dating.
Also uncovered were the foundations of a previously unknown rampart on a site clearly used and re-used over the centuries.
A full report will be published towards the end of the year and plans are going ahead for a similar exploration in late 2026 but it seems that Murray Cook has resolved the long-standing local argument about whether this was, in fact, a traditional motte or – as the neighbouring road name suggests – a Roman camp. The answer is probably NEITHER!!! …. but it WAS a strategically significant site.
With no V.A.R. available, we simply have to take Doctor Cook’s expert word.
